Santiago de Compostela– the meeting city

Santiago de Compostela is the capital of the autonomous community of Galicia, in northwestern Spain. The city has its origin in the 9th century with the discovery of the Apostle James’ tomb. Since then, Santiago de Compostela has become the final destination of a thousand-year-old pilgrim route: The Way of St. James. In 1985, the city’s Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Please visit the Santiago de Compostela tourist office for more information.

Taxis are generally easy to get. There are several taxi stands in the city centre. After 11 p.m. there is a small additional charge. For a taxi ride from Santiago de Compostela Airport (SCQ) to the city centre there is a fixed price 0f 21 euros.

Santiago de Compostela has a temperate oceanic climate, with mild to warm and somewhat dry summers and mild, wet winters. You can get a 5-day forecast of the local weather in Santiago de Compostela.

Santiago de Compostela is a bilingual city, official languages being Spanish and Galician. In addition, you may expect that most people (particularly younger people) have at least basic knowledge of English.

The Spanish currency unit is the Euro. You can exchange foreign currency in the airport of Santiago de Compostela. Banks are open from 08.30 to 14.30 on weekdays and closed on Saturdays and Sundays. There are numerous cash machines (ATMs) open around the clock and accepting all major credit cards. Major credit cards, in particular Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted almost everywhere (in hotels, restaurants, shops, taxis, etc.).
